PROJECT HISTORIES: THE SAP basis OF TOMORROW An entry in the Forum Infrastructure and Operations within the DSAGNet drew attention to the problem of the SAP basis as described above. This led to a lively discussion, which attracted a lot of interest from the members of the DSAM. Building on the interest and need for action of the member companies, a project was initiated by the DSAG as well as by the SAP, which should deal with the future of the SAP basis. Several companies were invited to participate and their willingness to participate actively was questioned in a DSAG survey. The first project meeting took place within the framework of the DSAG Annual Congress in Bremen in 2015. As a result, regular events took place at the SAP office in Freiberg am Neckar and St Leon-Rot, with the participation of up to 15 companies. In the project "the SAP basis of Tomorrow", current questions of the companies as well as the question of the SAP basis of the future were discussed and worked out with regard to the IT landscape, processes and organisational structure. A master's thesis was initiated to document and prepare the results as well as to examine the topic in scientific terms in parallel with the project. This was made at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt as part of the Master's programme in Information Systems with Prof. Dr. Karl Liebschnitel and submitted for evaluation at the end of March 2016.

The master's thesis identified and examined in detail influencing factors such as technological trends and the SAP product strategy as well as the company-specific conditions. Several empirical studies were also carried out in the course of the work. The SAP Basis team takes care of the entire administration of an SAP system. As a company, you have to decide whether you want to leave the support of your system within your company or place the "Basis" in the hands of an SAP expert.

INTRODUCTION A growing number of SAP-based departments are facing major changes and challenges within the SAP product portfolio as well as in their own task environment. These result from influences of digitalisation, digital transformation, new technologies such as cloud computing or big data, but also developments such as customer experience or the Internet of Things. In order to overcome the challenges and to transform the existing SAP basis, recommendations for action are grouped in seven thematic areas. These topics cover the areas of skills and roles (cloud and supplier management, strengthening of the technology architect, focus on project work), marketing and self-understanding (creation of a service catalogue, regular exchange with the CIO, renaming of the SAP basis), new technologies and innovation (test and innovation lab, proactive & regular training), organisation in change (development of the two subject areas close to structure and application-orientated , virtual teams of experts), standardisation and automation (automation of routine tasks, outtasking of rare tasks), "cloudability", outsourcing & outtasking (assessment of usefulness for the cloud, use of appropriate service forms) and IT roadmap (influence of own IT roadmap). By reflecting on the thematic areas, methods and possibilities for implementing the recommendations are presented.

Tools such as "Shortcut for SAP Systems" are extremely useful in basic administration.

The result is a branching web of connections that, in its entirety, creates the Enterprise Hybrid Cloud.

Today, there is a much wider choice, with our AIOps platform Avantra, code cleansing tools such as Panaya, test automation with HP Quality Center and IT service management with ServiceNow being just a few examples.
